In order to foster community, our participants meet biweekly as they settle into their new homes. Meetings address parenting skills and open circle discussion. Complete with fun pizza parties and holiday gatherings. Our in-house Caseworker meets regularly with our mothers to help them stay on course and overcome personal barriers.
Asheville, NC is suffering a housing crisis and affordable homes are hard to find. Women often return to abusive relationships only because they
cannot find and/or afford housing. Asheville has a tremendous need for affordable family homes in safe neighborhoods. Parent Next Door housing is located in a newly developed and pristine environment not within public housing projects where people can feel oppressed and lack the drive to succeed in fear of losing benefits.
Our single mothers have full time jobs at work and at home caring for their children. Every parent needs a night off or a few hours of alone time during the day to find solitude and recharge. Once trust has been established between our mothers they will be available to watch each other's children and give one another these precious moments.
Our participants are struggling on a single income. Even with full time jobs our mothers require government assistance and are anxious about financially supporting their families. They are eager to learn how to budget and save earnings so that they will no longer be welfare recipients, and instead become financially independent. Parent Next Door provides financial education and puts our single parents on track for home ownership.
The ultimate reward for beating poverty is home ownership. Owning a home provides security, credit lines, inheritances, and down payments for larger homes as our participants' families grow. It is truly the American dream!
